Iris and Alice are probably the cutest gay couple I’ve ever seen on a Brazilian soap opera. They’re not out, of course, and no-one on Fina Estampa even seriously questions their relationship. But it’s the little details that tell their real story. Iris is an aging socialite and a crook, a specialist in taking advantage of wealthy people to maintain her luxurious lifestyle. Alice is her personal assistant, fiercely loyal and extremely protective. Alice constantly mentions her beloved collections of boxers; Iris had the scare of her life only the other week when Alice was kidnapped. Once they were reunited, Iris declared she would become an ‘honest woman’, so Alice would never be put in danger again.
The author and the director of this soap are both gay men, and the most popular character in the show is an openly gay butler with a delicious comic streak, so I do have some hope that these ladies’ veiled affair will eventually stop being so damn subtle.
